FAQs

Will the bird spikes hurt the birds or me?
No. Our bird spike rods have blunted ends to avoid injury to birds or humans unlike some competitor’s razor spike strips.

Are these bird spikes approved by animal rights groups?
Because our bird spikes do not harm birds, our pigeon spike products (and other bird control devices) are recommended regularly by animal protection groups such as the U.S. Humane Society, The Fund for Animals and more.

Do bird spikes work to deter small birds like swallows or sparrows?
No. The spacing of the rods on bird spikes is specifically designed to deter larger birds like pigeons, crows, gulls and other large birds. Small birds like sparrows can maneuver between the rods and have figured out ways to build nests in our competitor’s more closely spaced bird spikes. If you have a problem with smaller birds, please contact us and we will get you information on species-specific bird control products.

How do I install bird spikes?
Generally bird spikes are installed by gluing the spike base to a surface, although you can also screw the base to the problem area. For more information on installing bird spikes, click here.

How tall are the bird spikes?
Each of the bird spikes is 4.5 inches long, although some don’t appear quite that long because of the angle at which they are set. For complete Bird Flite bird spike specifications, click here. (Requires Adobe Reader)

What materials make up your bird spikes?
Our Bird-Flite bird spikes and Gutter-Point consist of 316 marine-grade stainless steel, while the pigeon spike base is made from u ltra-violet stabilized polycarbonate. They are designed to be very long-lasting bird deterrents. Our Polly-Spike bird spikes consist entirely of ultra-violet stabilized polycarbonate for long-lasting bird control as well.

Are your bird spikes guaranteed? If so, for how long?
Our bird spikes carry a product manufacturer guarantee of five years. However, while these bird control products are officially guaranteed for five years, there are many installations where these bird spikes are still in service for over 10 years. You can be confident that our bird spikes will provide long-lasting protection from bird problems!

Do bird spikes work where birds are nesting?
Yes and no. Birds that are nesting are very committed to remaining in the area – it’s “home” for them. The resident birds that are nesting will work very hard to squeeze their way in between the spikes and may manage to do so by sheer force of will. However, if these few resident birds are removed through a human trapping program, the bird spike will protect the area from any new birds from taking up residence there. Generally when problem birds are nesting in an area, we recommend the use of bird net to completely exclude the birds or our humane electrified bird track product. If you would like more information on either of these products, please contact us.

How visible are the bird spikes when installed?
Bird spikes are very hard to detect from even a short distance away. Because the rods are thinner, our Bird-Flite stainless steel bird spike is less noticeable than the Polly-Spike, although the Polly-Spike is hard to see as well because it is made from clear polycarbonate. Once installed, most people don’t even know bird spikes are there!

On a parapet wall cap, do I need to cover the entire area with bird spike?
In general, most people want to protect the area below the ledge from droppings for aesthetic and cleanup reasons. In these cases, it is only necessary to install bird spikes on the outer edge of the parapet wall (with about a ½ inch overhang of the bird spikes on outer edge of the ledge). This will keep the birds from hanging out on the edge and their bird droppings from falling below to the sidewalks or canopies.

However, if you are concerned with keeping the area entirely bird-free, then you must install bird spikes across the entire parapet cap. You can leave up to a 2 inch gap between rows of spikes as shown in the installation diagrams which gives you some “free” coverage.

How can I keep problem pigeons and gulls off my boat radar?
Keep problem birds off boat radars with Bird-Flite bird spikes. Bird-Flite bird spikes have a 12-inch polycarbonate base with blunt, stainless steel rods protruding upwards. These bird spikes making landings virtually impossible. This bird deterrent’s base can be glued to the surface using Bird Barrier Bond (available in on-line ordering) or attached securely with twine or zip ties so the bird spikes remain upright to prevent problem birds from landing.
